This April 12, 1941, photograph shows the California State Capitol building lobby and its statue of Columbus's last appeal to Queen Isabella of Spain. Carved in Florence, Italy, the statue was donated to the state in 1883 by local banker D.O. Mills, who purchased the piece for $30,000.
