A Douglas Y1B-7 bomber at Mines Field (Los Angeles International Airport) at Westchester. This was the first monoplane given the B (for 'bomber') designation. Since monoplanes were more practical and less expensive than biplanes, US Army Air Corps chose to experiment with monoplanes for special uses. Despite a positive evaluation, the Y1B-7 was never mass produced due to its small bomb load and the existence of other more capable aircraft. Photo dated: October 20, 1932.
