A few homes can be seen in the distance.; Carmel-by-the-Sea, also known simply as Carmel, is a small and artistically rich town situated on the Monterey Peninsula that was incorporated in 1916. Some famous residents have included: Ansel Adams (photographer); Doris Day, Kim Novak, Betty White, Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston, former mayor Clint Eastwood (actors); Percy Gray, Xavier Martinez (painters); Rupert Murdoch, Charles Schwab (businessmen); Mary Austin, Jack London, Beverly Cleary, Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Robert Lewis Stevenson (novelist/Authors), etc. among many other famous people. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,081 people, 2,285 households, and 1,108 families residing in this quaint city.
