An unidentified assistant (front to back) and the survival school students Brian Schwarz, Marilyn Chandler, Ron Venn, Jack Madeley, Allen Mons, and Joel Turner all hold rifles while they walk through a grass field on an obstacle course. The 160-acre camp, better known as the Starlight Training Center in Liberal, Missouri, was owned by Harry Claflin, a former U.S. Marine in Vietnam. The students are U.S. civilians with different backgrounds and professions who paid money in exchange for survivalist training. Claflin studied the tactics, troop proficiency, and military effectiveness of foreign countries like those in Central America where he trained Guatemalan, Nicaraguan, and Salvadoran special forces. All his assistants have law enforcement or military backgrounds as well.
