. "Mr Ainsworth Gov. Asst. Collector." Portrait showing Mr John Ainsworth (1864-1946), the colonial administrator, mounted on a horse. He was influential in the creation of land reserves for the Kikuyu and Maasai and became the protectorate’s first chief native commissioner. The Kikuyu mission was founded in 1898 by Thomas Watson with responsibility for the running of the station taken over by the Church of Scotland in 1901 after Mr Watson’s death. This image is from a collection of photographs which possibly belonged to Dr Karl Uffman, son of Dr Henry Uffman of the Leprosy Asylum in Purulia, West Bengal. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and joined the Kikuyu mission from 1901 to 1905.
