Description
Shown in formation in July 1916 at a very temporary Camp Hiram Johnson are members of E Company of the California National Guard's Second Infantry Regiment, readying for deployment along the US-Mexico border. The camp, which billeted as many as 15,000 men by June 1916, was located on the grounds of the California State Fair at the northeast corner of Upper Stockton and Brighton Avenue. Visible in the background is grounds' water tower and a portion of the Machinery Building.
