Mark McGwire (left), in an exhibition game against the Dodgers. Born in Pomona and raised in Claremont, McGwire entered USC as a pitcher; he left as a first baseman with school slugging records. In 1984, the same year he was drafted by the Oakland A's, McGwire helped the U.S. win a silver medal at the L.A. Olympics.
