Description
"The Buddhist Temple of Los Angeles," published by The Buddhist Mission of Los Angeles and printed by Van Ornum Colorpint Company, dated 1913 August. The card has a colorful Arts and Crafts looking front with flowers and architectural elements framing three photos of the temple, including the front and one side of the three-story building, the altar and the pews. An inscription on the reverse of the postally unused card documents a visit to the temple in August 1913. The facility, on Savannah and 2nd streets in Boyle Heights, was the Rafu Bukkyokai and then, from 1921, the Higashi Hoganji Temple, serving the Japanese-American community. In 1976, the Temple moved to 3rd and Central in downtown and the old building is gone. With some light stains, minor soiling, and edge rubbing, the condition is good.
