Description
Integrity was an important value to the Greco Canning Company. This label for Integrity, DeLuxe Brand peaches states, "Our Integrity is in the Can." Victor V. Greco arrived in California in 1905 from Lousiana. He had been engaged in the pastry manufacturing business in New Orleans. From 1905 to 1913 he managed his father's Greco Salt Plant in Redwood City. In 1913 Victor Greco organized the Greco Canning Company at Howard & Autumn Streets in San Jose. The plant occupied an entire block. Mr. Greco's accomplishments included the introduction of concentrated tomato paste into this country and development of mold for asparagus-style packing in string beans. During World War I he was the largest packer of tomatoes in the world. By 1920 Greco Canning Company had branched out into agriculture lines, buying 70 acres of land off Brokow Road (where the San Jose Airport is located today) and planting orchards of Bartlett pears. While the trees were maturing, vegetables were grown between the rows for use in canning establishment. The Greco Company ceased operation in 1938.
