San Diego Free Public Library opened its doors to the public on April 23, 1902, the first Carnegie Library Building west of the Mississippi. Designed by architects Ackerman and Ross of New York City, the Classical Revival style structure was built to serve a city population of less than 17,000 and house a collection of 15,000 volumes.
