Photograph of drawing of three T-38 Supersonic Trainers in flight, ca. 1960. At center, three identical U.S. Air Force jets can be seen in flight. Each plane has a near cylindrical body, except for its pointed front. Above the beak of the plane, the glass-covered, dual cockpit seats two pilots. The body below the cockpit and left wing of each jet is decorated with a large, star-shaped emblem. The thruster engines behind each jet are also highlighted in the image. To the right, the closest jet is completely turned on its side. In the background to the left, the other two jets are visible tilted at various degrees. Description on the back of the photoprint reads: "This is the first detailed view of the US Air Force Northrop T-38 supersonic lightweight jet trainer now of Northrop Aircraft Incorporated, at Hawthorne, California. Shown in formation flight in this artist's conception are three of the twin get T-38's. The latest member of the family of advanced aircraft produced by Northrop 80, the armed services, the T-38 fills the need for a trainer aircraft with a performance capacity marketing the characteristics of an operational supersonic aircraft. Student and instructor are in the rear cockpit, which enables the instructor to check the students' movements and reactions. Indicating the supersonic capabilities of the T_38 is the 'coke bottle' or area-rule configuration of the fuselage. Crisp, clean lines of the T-38 reflect an advanced new design performance through light weight and simplicity. The hi-performance characteristics of the T-38 have been combined with lo initial maintenance costs and the ability to operate from short runways".
