Photograph was edited for publication purposes The Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild was an automobile design competition for boys aged 11-19. The national competition sponsored by the General Motors Corporation, began in 1930 and originally gave awards for craftsmanship in building Napoleonic coach models. The competition gained in popularity when in 1938 a new category was introduced to design and build model 'dream' cars. Winners were awarded substantial cash awards and scholarships. By 1968, the last year the competition was offered, over 8.7 million boys had enrolled making it second, only to the Boy Scouts, in membership. Photograph caption dated February 13, 1963 reads, "Roy R. Dickey, left, student at Art Center School, Los Angeles, accepts a trophy representing the first place national award in the Fisher Body Craftsman's Guild from Edward J. Legant, manager of the Fisher Body division plant in Van Nuys. Dickey won the national honor and a $5,000 scholarship for the model car he entered in the 1962 Craftsman's Guild competition. His total scholarship awards resulting from seven years of participation in the Guild amount to $7,500."
