Photograph caption dated December 2, 1987 reads, "Paramedics cover burn victim with sterile bandages after natural gas explosion and resulting fire destroyed eight-unit apartment complex in Hawthorne yesterday morning. The critically injured man, identified as Bruce Wiendensohler, reportedly said the blast was a result of his suicide attempt. Another 17 people inside the building were treated for minor injuries. The Red Cross set up a shelter for the residents of the complex and an adjacent building. Damages were estimated at up to $1 million."
