Description
Note: Als Nr. 40 publiziert im Album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer', Neuenburg 1895. (RI). Note translation: Published as no 40 in the album 'Achtzig Ansichten von der Goldküste (Westafrika) nach Originalaufnahmen des Missionars Fritz Ramseyer' (= 'Eighty pictures of the Goldcoast (West Africa) by the missionary Fritz Ramseyer'), Neuchâtel 1895. - Caption in the album: "Abankwa, chief of Obomeng. - Abankwa is one of the most intelligent chiefs of Kwahu. He loves european headgear, especially top-hats. If the top-hat is too big for him he solves the problem by binding a handkerchief around his head. He is wearing the kind of locally-produced cloth which is much loved in Asante and is decorated with many different signs which are woven into it. Abankwa sits under his large coloured umbrella, a sign of his dignity as chief." - There must be other possible explanations for Abankwa's head-scarf (PJ 7/98).
