Description
The woman wears a green morning dress with three wide rows of green braid and rows of green leaf-shapes at the hem. The wide, scooped neckline of the dress is trimmed with two rows of the same leaf shapes, though smaller. This edging extends over the shoulders. Under this are loose, long white sleeves, and a gathered higher neckline, also in white. The sleeves are trimmed with four narrow bands of green on the lower sleeve, and are fastened with two gold buttons. The woman wears yellow shoes, and a gold chain necklace. Her bonnet or mobcap is white and lacy, with lace ruffles at the brim and green, leaf-shapes decorating the the crown. The woman holds her place in a pink-covered book with her left hand. Her right hand rests on a large globe. The globe has a three-footed stand, and a large compass lies on the floor beneath it. The compass arrow points to north and to the woman. With her left foot, the woman steps on a closed book that lies on the floor, presumably to afford her a better look at the globe, which she examines intently.
