Description
Photograph of the front of the Mission San Xavier del Bac, Tucson, Arizona, ca.1900. Two towers flank the main entrance. The one on the left is whiter than the one on the right and has a dome and a cross on top unlike the one on the right. Behind part of the main dome on the church is visible. The surrounding land is barren. No people are in the image. "Nothing quite like it may be seen in any part of our rather large slice of the North American continent, this annual pilgrimage of the Papago Indians of Arizona to that white shrine in the desert, the mission church of San Xavier del Bac, five miles south of Tucson..." -- newspaper clipping.
