Description
Portrait of a wheelbarrow passenger and driver, the barrow has a single wooden wheel with an iron rim. The Chinese wheelbarrow was used to transport goods as well as people and was used widely in Shanghai before being superseded by the rickshaw, although it continued to be used well into the twentieth century. The barrows were easily manoeuvrable through the narrow streets and were cheap to hire.
