Archbishop Arturo Rivera y Damas blesses the wine and wafer as he prepares to give his congregation communion during Palm Sunday at the Cathedral of San Salvador. The mass also included a commemoration of the third anniversary of the assassination of Archbishop Óscar Arnulfo Romero. Romero was shot as he celebrated mass in a hospital chapel on March 24, 1980. Pope Francis canonized Romero, now Saint Óscar Romero, in 2018. The United Nations-led Truth Commission investigation concluded in 1983 that Roberto d'Aubuisson, a right wing politician that set up anti-communist death squad in El Salvador, was responsible for the murder of Romero but he was never brought to justice. Richard Cross took this image in 1982 while covering the presidential election and War of Liberation in El Salvador.
