The Southern California Festival of Allied Arts began in 1934, and by 1935 included 6,000 competitors in music, sculpture, drama, handicraft competitions and other categories. Photo 1 shows Miss Johanna Notenagle sitting at her loom, a basket of yarn lays on the floor in front of the loom, on her right, a wide assortment of color threads, behind her, long skeins of yarn hanging from pegs, and completed plaid scarves draped over a chair on her left, as well as one scarf draped around her neck. Miss Notenagle, age 75, was the oldest entrant in the 1934 contest. She won first prize for industrial artcraft with the Scotch plaid scarves that she wove. Photo dated: 1934.
