Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1899-1989. At the turn of the 20th Century, when tennis was one of the few sports that welcomed female athletes, Pasadena's May Sutton won the U.S. Championships at age 16. In 1905, she literally rolled up her long sleeves and won her first singles title at Wimbledon, becoming the first American--male or female--to win there. In 1908, May became the first sports celebrity to reign as the Tournament of Roses queen. With her husband, Thomas Bundy, she built the Los Angeles Tennis Club, home of the Pacific Southwest Championships, southern California's most prestigious tourney. Later, their daughter, Dorothy Bundy Cheney, became a top-ranked player. Photo dated: May 26, 1928.
