Recorded as part of the Lambda Archives of San Diego's 20th anniversary. As Fire Chief of the San Diego FireRescue Department, Tracy Jarman served for 23 years in almost every capacity in the support services areas of the department before Mayor Jerry Sanders selected her for the position out of 30 other applicants, saying ìShe is not only superbly well qualified, but also the perfect person for the job.î One of only two dozen female fire chiefs in the country, Jarman, 51, heads the second-largest department among that select company. She joined San Diegoís fire department in 1984, moved up to assistant chief in 2003 and was appointed chief in 2006. Jarman administers astaff of 928 firefighters, 124 lifeguards, 85 uniformed positions in EmergencyMedical Services, 121 civilian personnel and oversees a budget of $160 million California Preservation Service (CAPS)
