Description
Republican mural, Ballymurphy Crescent, Ballymurphy, West Belfast, 2002 (updated 2008). Image shows four IRA volunteers (with rifles and RPG7 rocket launcher) eating at safe house; two Republican women (Kathleen McCullough and Elizabeth McGivern). The main figure is Thomas 'Todler' Tolan, Officer Commanding IRA, Ballymurphy, killed by rival Official IRA, 27 July 1977 (on the next street); other volunters are Michael Kane, 4 September 1970, James McGillen, 15 February 1976, John Stone, 21 January 1975; multicoloured Celtic surround, which includes emblems of four provinces of Ireland. The figure of Tolan has been re-imaged in the later version.
