A weekend arts program at Elysian Heights Elementary is giving these two young boys the opportunity to experience working with a potter's wheel as they try their hand - quite literally - at pottery making. An older gentleman, possibly the art teacher, is wiping away excess clay from the "bat", or rotating tray, of one boy's potter's wheel. These wheels appear to have a crankshaft on the bottom right side, making it easier for the boys to maneouver the speed of the bat as they work. Elysian Heights Elementary school opened in 1915 and is located at 1562 Baxter Street. The grades are K-5 with approximately 372 students enrolled and 22 teachers on staff - making it a 17 student per teacher ratio. Photograph dated October 18, 1997.
