Description
Three armed soldiers stand in front of a line of Mayan men waiting in line to vote on March 7, 1982. The men in line are wearing hats and many are wearing colorful clothing. Each soldier is armed with an IMI Galil rifle of Israeli origin. The two soldiers on the right are wearing a helmet while the third soldier wears a hat. The soldier standing to the extreme right of the image is lighting a cigarette with another cigarette. The soldier standing to the extreme left of the image is holding a cigarette in his left hand. The government required every literate person over the age of eighteen to vote or pay a fine. They were told that they would be killed if they did not vote. Groups of Mayan men started lining up to vote at five in the morning.
