Description
Night view of pilot Clare Vance's "Flying Wing" at Union Airport (Bob Hope Airport) in Burbank at the start of the Bendix races to Cleveland. The plane carried 1200 gallons of fuel in its thick center section, sufficient for a non-stop range of 7500 miles. Vance competed unsuccessfully in the race, which took place just a few months before his death in December 1932. The airplane was subsequently modified and was entered in, but did compete in the 1933 and 1934 Bendix races. Photo dated: August 22, 1932.
