The caption refers to the Angeles National Forest fire that began on October 13, 1959 in the Dark Canyon area of the Angeles National Forest. 30 m.p.h. gusts were responsible for the swift and erratic spread of the fires that burned through La Can~ada Flintridge and Big Tujunga Canyon, and threatening a wide span of neighborhoods including Altadena, Pasadena, Palmdale, and La Crescenta. Photograph caption dated October 14, 1959 reads, "Fireman helps Mrs. Richard R. Myers carry clothing from her home as flames char within 10 feet of house at 5244 Vista Miguel Dr. in La Canada. More than 400 residents were evacuated from homes as fire swept foothills.
