Photograph caption dated October 5, 1985 reads, "An RTD bus bound for Eagle Rock made it no further than this palm tree at Figueroa and 46th streets yesterday, and 26 people found themselves headed for a hospital instead. Police said the bus driver hit the brakes when an oncoming van made a left turn in his path. The bus, with 50 aboard, skidded into a lamppost and came to rest against the tree. That's the bus driver on the stretcher at left. Frightened by electrical wires brought down when the pole fell, the screaming passengers scrambled out of windows, witnesses said. Ambulances rushed victims to six hospitals, where almost all the injuries were called minor."
