Description
Photograph of Indian penitents, ca.1888. Penitents and observers line up near a rocky hill. The penitents, dressed in bright color pants and naked from the waste up, are either carrying large wooden crucifixes or stand bowing their heads in repentance. Observers are wearing dark colored clothes with the exception of the children who are wearing bright color clothes. Several of the observers are holding up pictures (drawings or paintings, perhaps of religious figures?). Trees dot the hilly landscape in the background.
