Carreta stamp designed by Theron Fox and worth 7.6 cents, part of the Transportation series, to be used for nonprofit bulk mail. The stamp was available for first day issues only in San Jose, and was an honor for the city to be chosen. The carreta, meaning "cart," in Spanish, was used by the natives and early settlers of Spanish California. This primitive vehicle, consisting of a cage mounted on large wooden wheels, was used to haul firewood and water and to transport women and children to Mass on Sundays.
