Photograph caption dated September 12, 1961 partially reads "New Sylmar High School opens today and the coaching staff (above) meets before launching the first athletic competition. They are, from left, Al Arps, head coach; Dick Bauer, varsity football; and Jack Rankin, basketball. Besides a gymnasium, the $6 million school includes more than 70 classrooms, library, cafeteria and student store. The school is located on a 30-acre site at 13050 Borden Ave., Sylmar. Initial enrollment will number almost 1,000, but ultimately the school may hold 3,000."
