Remedus Laborado Altar, who was of Chinese, Philipino, and Spanish descent, was born August 16, 1926 in Hawaii. Her father had come to Hawaii at the age of 17 to work for the Dole Plantations. He was drafted during WWII. He met his wife (Remy's mother) while studying at Mid-Pacific Institute. Remy moved to Los Angeles in 1952. She received her master's degree in teaching and administration from USC in 1969. She married Raymond Altar and raised her three children Michael, Lei-Ann, and Kevin in the Los Feliz neighborhood before moving to La Canada Flintridge. Remy enjoyed a 30 career as a teacher and administrator at LAUSD and was later elected to the Calfornia Senior Legislature, a volunteer organization that advocates for Seniors. Remy passed away July 1, 2015 surrounded by friends and family. Her family asked that donations be made in her name to Descanso Gardens.
