Description
Located on G Street, between Second and Third Streets, and shown here in 1882 is the three track Central Pacific depot, also commonly known as the “Arcade Station.” One of the most modern stations of its day, the gothic-style garage, with its signature twin spires, was built in 1879, almost entirely of wood and boasted a 150-seat dining room. The Arcade was third in the line of Central Pacific and Southern Pacific depots and was replaced in 1926 with a brick-clad station at Fourth and I Streets. The train pictured is the “Oregon Express” with a wood-laden tender. Several men stand in front of the station, looking toward the camera.
