Description
Dressed in rich gold vestments, the Most Rev. Joseph T. McGucken is shown (arrow in center) walking into St. Vibiana's Cathedral today where he was consecrated titular Bishop of Sanavo and Auxiliary Bishop of Los Angeles. Arrow in background shows Archbishop John J. Cantwell, who performed the age-old ceremony of the laying on of hands that elevated the native son of Los Angeles to the episcopacy. McGucken, a priest and auxiliary bishop for many years in Los Angeles, went on to serve as the fifth Archbishop of San Francisco from 1962 to 1977. Photo dated: March 19, 1941.
