Description
Sutter's Fort and Saint Francis of Assisi Catholic Church are displayed prominently in this circa 1935 postcard. The long road to returning the historic fort to its past appearance started in 1890, when the Sunset Parlor of the Native Sons of the Golden West purchased the area for a sum of 20,000 dollars. It was then donated to the State Legislature with restoration work beginning in 1891.
