Not long after Joan Barry filed the first paternity suit against Chaplin, federal prosecutors brought Mann Act charges against Charlie Chaplin in relation to Barry; he was acquitted. Photograph caption dated March 23, 1944 reads, "Whiling the time away in court, Charlie Chaplin yesterday went in for 'doodling' in a big way, these being the battered brogans in which he climbed the ladder of film fame."
