Photograph was edited for publication purposes Los Angeles Airways, founded in 1944, invented the term 'heliport' and was the first company to receive authority to carry mail by helicopter as well as passengers. Photograph caption dated March 17, 1956 reads, "Aerial pony express modern approach to letter delivery is in action as helicopter prepares to settle down on International Airport. Four-engine airplane waits in distance for precious mail which will reach New York a few hours later.
