Photograph caption dated February 27, 1957 reads, "This 200-year-old oak tree at Weddington street and Amestoy avenue in Encino was saved from axe by Board of Public Works. Encino residents and Councilman Earle Baker urged tree be spared. It is said to be part of grove in which Gaspar de Portola stopped in 1769 on trek north in search of Monterey Bay."
