Black and white lantern slide showing stalls at a religious fair, or "mela", in Thawe, Gopalganj district, Bihar. Crowds of men and women in traditional dress can be seen on the path up to the stalls, which are housed in cloth tents. "Mela" is a Sanskrit word meaning "gathering", "fair" or "to meet" and can be used for any sort of religious, commercial or cultural gathering. Many of the men attending this gathering appear to be Muslim. This slide comes from a collection created by missionaries from Regions Beyond Missionary Union, an interdenominational Protestant evangelical mission working in northeast India (Bihar and Orissa) and Nepal.
