Description
"Miss Miller, Dr. B. Garvie and The Zenana Staff." Group portrait of zenana workers. A zenana was that part of the house to which women of a family were secluded. Male missionaries were prohibited from teaching women in the zenana. As such, women missionaries and native converts were recruited to visit women in zenanas. Miss Katherine Miller arrived in Jaipur in 1884 with several other women. The zenana work eventually expanded to include medical care as well, and Dr. Beatrice Garvie was appointed in 1896 and transferred to Jaipur in 1899. ❧ United Free Church of Scotland photographs from the Rajputana mission.
