Used in the Exhibit: Play by Play - A Century of L.A. Sports Photography, 1889-1989 USC coach Howard Jones (left) demonstrates blocking technique on wrestling champ "Strangler" Lewis. Jones took the job after Notre Dame's Knute Rockne turned down the Trojans. Under Jones' direction, USC and the "Thundering Herd" won three undisputed national titles in 16 years. He won five Rose Bowls, including the 1939 game, when his Trojans upset undefeated, unscored-upon Duke, 7-3, on reserve quarterback Doyle Nave's last-minute touchdown pass to Al Krueger. Photo dated: November 2, 1929.
