Photograph was edited for publication purposes Photograph caption dated October 7, 1954 reads, "Johnnie Barnes, foreman for the Spahn ranch on Santa Susana Pass, tries his hand at sharpening an old scythe blade probably used years ago by Valley hay producers. Barnes, who manages the ranch, has motorized equipment, but blade, rusty and useless, reminded him of grandfather in Tennessee, who used such an item."
