Description
Chico train wreck, Aug. 30, 1887, [1:05 a.m.]. Engine on left side of photo is Central Pacific No. 165, the Aurora. Built by Danforth L & M, November 1868. In service on C.P. 5-12-1869. No. 165 had 60" dia. drivers, 16 x 22 cylinders & weighed 66,000 lbs. Became Southern Pacific's No. 1180 in 1891. It was scrapped 6-1893. Engine on right side of photo is California Pacific No. 11, the D.C. Haskins. Built by Wm. Mason 6-1870. It was the 361st locomotive built by Wm. Mason. No. 11 had 56 dia. drivers, 16 x 24 cylinders and weighed 61,000 lbs. It was leased to the Stockton & Cooperopolis Railroad as their No. 1 the Andrew Jackson on 2-1-1871. It was returned to the California Pacific, 8-1871 and the old name & number restored. No. 11 became SP #1241 in 1891. Deposition [sic] unknown. The Cal. Pacific came under the control of the C.P. & W.P. The California Pacific was operated as a separate company until it was consolidated with and became part of the S.P. on April 14, 1898. T
