Photograph of Mr. Frederic A. Batty, the Department of Public Works Superintendent of Sewers, crouching over a manhole to check for gas odor, [s.d.]. Just to the left of center, Mr. Batty supports himself over a manhole, placing his hands on either side. Pavement fills the rest of the image. A previous version of the method says "detecting gas odor by nose method".
