Description
This July 4, 1924 photograph shows two African-American couples at Field Day festivities, held every Independence Day at Folsom Prison. The tradition was instituted by Warden Charles Aull, and included live entertainment, baseball games and a special meal. The suited men wear top hats and hold cakes. The women wear light-colored dresses and carry parasols. In the background is the prison’s main cellblock building.
