Description
Generic crate label for Arrow Brand, California Packing Corporation, San Francisco, California. The type of fruit would be printed in the blank white space. The label recalls the romantic vision of Native Americans in this era. Fruits were often displayed in their crates in grocery stores and markets, so crate labels were designed to stand out and appeal to the customer's eye. The California Packing Corporation (later known as Calpak) was formed in 1916 as the result of the merger of the California Fruit Canners Association, the Central California Canneries, Griffen & Skelley, and the J.K. Armsby Company. California Packing Corporation sold its products under a number of proprietary and distributive labels, including their premium brand, Del Monte. In June 1967, the company name was officially changed to the Del Monte Corporation. This label was printed by the Muirson Label Company of San José. Located on Stockton Avenue, Muirson was the only label-printing operation in the Santa Clara Valley from its founding in 1914 until its closure in 1970.
