Description
Pictured in circa 1924 is Sacramento Solon great Earl McNeely. Born in Sacramento in 1898, the speedy centerfielder went on to become the hero of the 1924 World Series. While playing for the Washington Senators, he drove in the winning run in the 12th inning of game seven of the series with the New York Giants. McNeely had been sold to Washington by the Solons’ then-owner, Lew Moreing, for $50,000. He played for Sacramento from 1922 to 1924 prior to spending eight years in the American League with a batting average of .272. Upon returning to Sacramento and residing in Orangevale, McNeely became the Solons’ manager in 1932. He eventually went into the farming and cattle business until retiring in 1959. He died in 1971.
