Sammy Cahn was a burlesque violinist who wrote some of America's favorite songs and won four Academy Awards, three Oscars, and an Emmy for his tunes. He was considered the nation's highest-paid songwriter, often earning more than $1,000 a word. In addition, Mr. Cahn penned lyrics for Broadway musicals, television musicals and children's shows.
