Description
Note: "Kgl. Musik Kapelle m. Tanzmasken. (Wuhrmann, A., 1917. Beschreibung zu den Lichtbildern aus Bamum. E-30-0,6).
Note translation: Royal band with dancing masks. The annual Sowing Festival is in full swing. Huge and hideous dancing masks jump around on the market place. The onlookers shout with joy. This band works hard and plays an important role in making the festival successful. It is, so to speak, the central point, about which everything revolves. Big drums are beaten continuously with quite unnecessary force! Rattles are rattled, and a well-practised musician runs a ring of iron at an incredible speed up and down a notched piece of wood. In the background someone with round cheeks blows into a mighty horn made from an elephant tusk, and many people shout and jodle as loud as the music plays. The sun s burning rays beat down on this happy little people [sic] and dancers and musicians sweat in the heat. (A. Wuhrmann, 1917, Commentaries to Slides from Bamum, E-30-0,6. K 372). - "Male" and "female" drums (PV 02.2002).
