Cunneen entered Maryknoll in 1923 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1932. After ordination he was assigned to Wuchow. He returned to the United States in 1941 and became a Navy Chaplain. In 1945, he returned to mission in Wuchow, during the war years. He was later assigned to Hawaii and teaching in the minor seminary.
