Description
Located in the middle terrace of mihintale, the refectory measures 14 X 77 feet with a central courtyard (measuring 62 X 25 feet) which is paved with granite slabs. The roof was supported by 14 rows of stone columns. The area included a kitchen, store rooms and large troughs for food (gruel and rice). The courtyard was supplied with water by cisterns and covered drains and the water was supplied to the alms hall by the so-called Nāga pokuna (Cobra Pond) through clay pipes buried in the ground.
